Tutorial for Dental School Interviews: Lesson 5

The Toughest Dental Interview Question

During your dental school interviews, you will certainly be asked the question: “ What is your greatest weakness?” There is one way to conquer this tough dental interview question: prepare for it hard and then interview easy so that it will not stop you from getting into dental school. You need to be honest about a weakness of yours but you don’t have to pick your “greatest weakness”. In other words, you do need to confess something but make sure not to confess any significant deficiency that is not already on your dental school application. If you do, you will guarantee yourself a dental school rejection letter.

Confess something small such as a mistake you’ve made in the past and then show how you have corrected it or learned from it. Here is one example of an acceptable response. Perhaps your weakness is that you didn’t plan for enough physical activity during your first two years of college. But then, you decided to make good health your priority, and scheduled 30 minutes of exercise into your day every day. You found that the exercise improved your energy levels and made you happier. This example demonstrates your ability to recognize a problem and then to take positive steps to correct it. If you happen not to be asked for a weakness during the interview for the dental university, don’t volunteer any! Leave well enough alone.

Another tough situation that may arise during your interview for school of dentistry is being asked about some personal information that you DIDN’T provide on your dental school application. These days it is possible for a member of the dental school admissions committee to google you. Your interviewer from the dental school faculty may learn all about your interests, your community service, or your political associations just with the click of mouse. If you have any questionable photos on facebook or any other information about yourself on the web that you do not want your dental school interviewer to know about you, delete them NOW. Don’t let this stop you from getting into a top dental school. Be prepared to discuss any public information that is available about you via the web.

Important Note:If you do have a particular disability that will affect your performance as a dental school student, as a practicing dentist or oral surgeon, you will need to discuss your situation during your dental school interview. This is not the situation that I am referring to when I present the question “What is your greatest weakness?”
